Biography

Dr. Huiyao Wang studied Physics at the Lanzhou University, Lanzhou, China and graduated as MS in 1993. He then joined the research group of Prof. Tianmin Wangin the Department of Material Science at the Lanzhou University. He received his PhD degree in 1998 at the same University. After two years postdoctoral fellowship and several research associate works, he obtained the position of an Associate Professor at the New Mexico State University. He has published more than 40 research articles in SCI journals.

Dr. Tharwat M. El-Sakran's research interests are in the fields of Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL), Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), Teaching English for Specific Purposes (TESP), Discourse Analysis, intercultural communication and forensic linguistics. He has published four books and a substantial number of research papers in peer-reviewed journals. Along with his colleagues, he has been engaged in the teaching of technical communication skills through engineering multidisciplinary projects. In such projects the focus is on teamwork, personality management and development, and student-centered learning. Dr. EL-Sakran is one of the associate editors for the Asian ESP Journal. He is also a Certified Fraud Examiner.

Dr. Sohlberg is an Associate Professor in the Department of Chemistry at Drexel University. His broad research area is theoretical and computational materials chemistry, with specific research programs in complex catalytic materials and molecular nano-devices. Before joining the Drexel faculty in 2000 he was an Oak Ridge Associated Universities postdoctoral fellow at Oak Ridge National Lab (Oak Ridge, TN). Earlier, he held postdoctoral appointments at The Johns Hopkins University and Brigham Young University. He received his Ph.D. in physical chemistry from the University of Delaware under the supervision of Krzysztof Szalewicz. Sohlberg has more than 130 peer-reviewed publications.

Joined the Chemical Engineering Department in Fall 2012. The primary focus of our research is the design, synthesis, and evaluation of nanomaterials for various medical applications. This includes self-assembled chemistries, nanoparticles, nanotubes, and nanostructured surfaces. Medical applications include inhibiting bacteria growth, inflammation, and promoting tissue growth. Tissues of particular interest are bone, cartilage, skin, nervous system, bladder, cardiovascular, and vascular. There is also an interest in anti-cancer applications where nanomaterials can be used to decrease cancer cell functions without the use of pharmaceutical agents. There is also a large interest in developing in situ sensors which can sense biological responses to medical devices and respond in real time to ensure implant success. Lastly, there is an interest in understanding the environmental and human health toxicity of nanomaterials.

Then he moved to Hillsboro with his wife and worked in Semiconductors. In 2007 Dave along with Dr. Tom Wallow produced a paper on ArF double patterning for semiconductors. This multi-pattering scheme is widely used in today’s semiconductor manufacturing plants. In 2011 Dave started a consulting business for Semiconductors. In 2017 Dave Started Climate Change Truth Research Inc. Dave is seeking the truth about climate change. Dr. Sunirmal Jana, Senior Principal Scientist & Professor at CSIR-Central Glass and Ceramic Research Institute (CSIR-CGCRI), Kolkata, India graduated as MS in Chemistry in 1991 from University of Kalyani and PhD (Science) in 1998 from Jadavpur University, India. He joined as a Junior Scientist at CSIR-CGCRI in December 1997. Dr. Jana worked as an invited Visiting Scientists including Brain Pool Scientist at Korea Research Institute of Chemical Technology, South Korea. He is an Editor/Editorial Board Member of several peer reviewed functional thin films and nanomaterials related journals. Dr. Jana is also a Life Member of many academic/research organizations/societies. Presently, he has published about 70 SCI/peer reviewed research papers, more than 80 conference papers, 6 book chapters and 3 Indian patents.

Dr. Vakhtang Barbakadze has his expertise in isolation and structure elucidation of biologically active plant polysaccharides and polyethers. In 1978 and 1999 he has completed his Ph.D. and D.Sci., respectively. He is the Head of the Department of Plant Biopolymers at the Tbilisi State Medical University Institute of Pharmacochemistry. In 1996 and 2002 he has been a visiting scientist at Utrecht University (The Netherlands) by University Scholarship and The Netherlands organization for scientific research (NWO) Scholarship Scientific Program, respectively. He has published more than 100 papers in reputed journals. In 2004 he was Georgian State Prize Winner in Science and Technology.

Raymond C. Jagessar obtained his BSc (Distinction) in Chemistry/Biology from the University of Guyana (1992) and his PhD from the UK (1995). He held three Post Doctoral Research Fellowships at the University of South Carolina (USA), Wichita State University (USA) and the University of the West Indies (1996-1999). He has also won several international awards, amongst them are Chartered Chemist, CChem and Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, FRSC, UK. His research interests are broad, covering the spectrum of Pure and Applied Chemistry, Chemical Biology, Pharmaceutical and Medicinal Chemistry. He has published over seventy (70) research articles, five book chapters and presented at several international conferences. He is currently Professor in Chemistry at the University of Guyana (South America)

His primary research interests center on ABC transporter-mediated drug disposition; structure, function and transport mechanism of ABC transporters; and mechanisms by which pregnancy affects drug/xenobiotic disposition including fetal exposure to drugs and xenobiotics through regulating drug disposition genes (drug metabolizing enzymes and transporters). Currently, his lab is interested in structure and function of the Human Breast Cancer Resistance Protein (BCRP/ABCG2), one of the ATP-binding cassette (ABC) efflux transporters important for drug disposition. His lab is one of the first to demonstrate that BCRP in the placental barrier limits fetal exposure to drugs routinely used by pregnant women such as glyburide and nitrofurantoin using pregnant mouse models. His research interests have now extended to investigate how ABC efflux transporters in the placental barrier influence fetal exposure to cannabinoids which are being increasingly used by pregnant women as well as placental and fetal toxicity of cannabinoids. In addition, he is investigating the mechanisms by which pregnancy alters drug disposition through changing expression of drug disposition genes. In this regard, he found that the magnitude of change in drug disposition by pregnancy observed in humans could be replicated in mice, indicating that pregnant mice are appropriate animal models to study the mechanisms of changes in drug disposition by pregnancy which are difficult to study in humans due to ethical challenges. Using the mouse models, he has shown that the systemic exposure to various drugs is significantly altered by pregnancy through induction of drug-metabolizing enzymes such as Cyp3a and Ugt genes. Recently, he is expanding his research to examine how the gut microbiome affects drug disposition during pregnancy. Such studies are important for mechanistic understanding of how drugs can be safely and effectively used during pregnancy.

Ms. Costa possesses a bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Campinas, Brazil (2018). She is currently pursuing her Master’s degree at the same institution under the supervision of Dr. Suppino. She developed a research project on catalysis at the Brazilian Synchrotron Light Laboratory (LNLS/CNPEM), which led to a publication in Chemical Engineering Transactions (Scopus Journal). Her most recent work regarding the use of niobia in heterogeneous catalysis was accepted for an oral presentation at the 17th International Congress of Catalysis.

Emilia Paone is a Post-Doc researcher at the Università degli Studi Mediterranea di Reggio Calabria, where she obtained her PhD in April 2019 working in the Chemistry Research Group. Her research activities lie in the field of heterogeneous catalysis with particular emphasis on the valorization of biomass derived molecules through the catalytic C-O bond breaking promoted by heterogeneous catalysts. In particular, her research project is focused in the catalytic transfer hydrogenolysis (CTH) of lignin for the sustainable production of aromatic feedstocks. Emilia Paone is co-author of 14 publications in peer-reviewed ISI journals and 2 ISI Book Chapters and, during these years, she attended as speaker several International and National Conferences.

Dr. Ricardo Sonsim de Oliveira studied Chemistry at the State University of Western Paraná, graduated in 2006, specialized in higher education, master's degree in bioenergy and biofuels in 2013. He received his PhD degree in 2017 at the same institution. He is professor at the federal institute of Paraná and one of the founders of the course of chemical analysis, head of a research group from CNPQ (national council for scientific and technological development) called product development and chemo-biophysical processes. He works in several areas of chemistry, having filed four patents, one of them in the area of renewable energy.

She is the Head of the Department of Thermodynamics and Basic Operations and Head of the Chemical Engineering Department.Under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Nezihe AYAS, 8 master's and 2 doctoral theses have been completed, 5 master's and 1 doctoral thesis are ongoing. Dr Lucia Steenkamp obtained her PhD in 1991 at the Rand Fricakkns University in Johannesburg, South Africa and was employed at Delta G Scientic and AECI before starting her career at the CSIR in 1999.  She is a Principal Researcher and heads the Biocatalysis Group at the CSIR.  She has 15 peer reviewed articles, 2 book chapters, 5 granted patents, 8 technology demonstrators and 5 complete Technology packages which were transferred and commercialized by industry partners.  She won the award: South African Woman in Science for Research and Innovation in 2018.

She works as an engineer, in the design, construction and management of energy and water treatment projects, since 2005, in companies such as Biodis Engineering Swiss, Monofuels, Suez or Ence. Jorge Xiberta Bernat holds a Master's degree in Chemistry (University of Barcelona, Spain, 1967) and a PhD in Chemistry (University of Oviedo, Spain, 1972). At the University of Oviedo he was appointed Full Professor of Physical Chemistry (1974), Professor of Thermal Engines (1994) and Professor Emeritus (2016). He has participated in 11 EC research projects (1983-2009) and 30 Spanish projects (1983-2010). Financed by the EC, he has directed in Spain the "Energy Plan for the Principality of Asturias 1995-2005" (Regional and Urban Energy Plan, XVII, EC) and the Energy Agency ASTURENER (SAVE II, DGXVII, EC) from 1997 to 2000. He is author of over 50 articles in peer-reviewed international journals and other publications. José Pablo Paredes Sánchez received the Ph.D. degree in energy engineering from the University of Oviedo, Spain. He is a lecturer with the Energy Department, University of Oviedo. He is the author or coauthor of papers and conferences presentations on renewable energy and energy efficiency. He has been associated with renewable energy projects of the Oviedo Higher Technical School of Mining Engineering. He is also involved in research programs for updating renewable energy and energy-efficiency research, and higher education.

Dr. Simone Carradori completed his PhD in “Pharmaceutical Sciences” at Sapienza University of Rome (Italy). Dr. Simone Carradori has collaborated and still collaborates with several departments abroad. Now he is assistant professor in Medicinal Chemistry at the Department of Pharmacy at “G. d’Annunzio” University of Chieti-Pescara (Italy). The scientific activity is mainly focused on the characterization and synthesis of heterocyclic derivatives with potential biological activity, and is documented from about 181 papers in international peer-reviewed journals, one patent and participations in numerous conferences. Dr. Laila LAASRI is currently Professor at the Faculty of Sciences Ben M’Sik, Casablanca, Morocco since 2013. She was awarded her PhD in 2007 from the University of Hassan II of Casablanca, Morocco. She then worked in an engineering school, ESITH-Casablanca, where she held the position of R&D Director. Her research interests include the introduction of green organic chemistry in laboratory describing the environmentally benign preparation of highly added value products, while enhancing natural phosphate as an efficient heterogenous catalyst and a very abundant Moroccan natural resource. The author holds two patents related to the valuation of Moroccan natural resource.

M.Sc. Irmina Wojciechowska studied biological chemistry at the University of Adam Mickiewicz in Poznań (Poland) and obtained a master's degree in 2013. Then she joined the research group of D. Sc. Karolina Wieszczycka at the Institute of Technology and Chemical Engineering at the Department of Organic Chemistry of the Poznań University of Technology. She obtained the degree of engineer at the same university in 2014. Currently, she is a PhD student at the Faculty of Chemical Technology of the Poznań University of Technology. Shalaka Varshney was born in Uttar Pradesh, India in 1993. She is a PhD student at the Department of Chemical Sciences, Ariel University, Ariel, Israel under the supervision of Dr. TomerZidki and Prof. Dan Meyerstein. She received her Dual Degree B.Tech. andM.Tech. in Nanotechnology from the University of Rajasthan, Jaipur, India in 2016.Her research currently focuses on the investigation of nano-catalytic reaction mechanism on the surface of metallic and bimetallic nanoparticles catalyzed reduction reactions. Herinterests are in the synthesis and characterization of metallic, bimetallic nanoparticles and different dimensional nanomaterials and their self-assembly in discotic liquid crystals.

Dr. Adeleke Abdulrahman Oyekanmi is a research fellow at the School of Industrial technology, Universiti Sains Malaysia. His core expertise are in water and wastewater management by creating sustainable treatment technologies.  He is a researcher of repute with vast experiences in environmental management, pollution analysis, modelling and optimization of process variables for enhanced operational system. His expertise includes water quality assessment and prediction of surface and sub-surface storm water pollution using geographical information systems, modelling of water quality parameters, wastewater treatments and solid wastes management. His works on new processes development, mathematical modelling and optimization are well documented in reputable international journals in the web of sciences. Dr. Elisa Jimenez-Izal received her Ph.D. degree in 2014, under the supervision of Prof. Ugalde at the University of the Basque Country, Spain. She then moved to the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) to continue with her postdoctoral studies under the supervision of Prof. Alexandrova. After four years she obtained an Ikerbasque research fellowship at the University of the Basque Country and the Donostia International Physics Center, both in Donostia, Spain. Dr. Fan is a Professor of the School of Physics, Liaoning University, and also the Deputy Dean of the Lvyuan Institute of Energy & Environmental Science and Technology. He got his B.Sc. in physics from Liaoning University in 2003 and his Ph.D from the Department of Materials Science and Engineering of Nanjing University in 2008. He was promoted to the rank of senior Lecturer in May 2014 and that of Associate Professor in November 2019. He is currently head of the unit of computational, medical and theoretical Chemistry in the same university and author of several publications.

Biography

Dr Rios is a Lecturer at the Institute for Bioengineering at the School of Edinburgh with more than 10years of proven track record inBiocatalysis, Synthetic Biology and Biochemical Engineering. His research group has ample expertise in precision genome engineering and enzyme engineering combined with using high-throughput automated microscale tools. Dr Rios is currently the director of the Bio-automation network at the University of Edinburgh.  Dr Rios is also currently representing the UK in the Management Committee of the European Union Coordination Support Action (CSA) project “BioRoboost” setting up an international collaborative network on synthetic biology and automation standards.
